Things continue to evolve rapidly as people around the world grapple with the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). This week in Victoria, we have moved to stage three restrictions, where Victorians could now face fines if they leave the house for anything other than food and supplies, medical care, exercise or for work and education that cannot be completed from home. Similar restrictions are being put in place in other states and territories. 

Most of you will have seen that on Monday the Federal Government announced a JobKeeper Payment subsidy for organisations who have lost a considerable amount of income due to the virus. We received the announcement at the same time as everyone else, and are working as quickly as possible to understand what this means for the Y. To find out more about where we are at in this process, please view my latest video update below where Martina Smythe, General Manager – People and Culture, and I talk about the subsidy in more detail. 

As I mentioned last week, our Early Learning Centres have been classified as an essential service to the community and therefore are currently still operating. Occupancy rates have dropped at many of our centres and therefore some staff have had to be stood down. Again, these decisions have not been easy. We are working on partnerships with other organisations to support staff and volunteers throughout this time, whether that be through job alternatives, health and wellbeing programs or learning and development initiatives. 

For those early learning staff who are still working, we are doing everything we can to keep you and the children who attend our centres safe during this time. I recognise it’s nearly impossible for you to practise social distancing while looking after children, in particular young children. However, I know you are doing an incredible job talking to the children about the coronavirus and the strict social distancing and hygiene measures are so important. 

Last week I mentioned we were working on a partnership with Les Mills to secure access for our staff, volunteers and customers to Les Mills On Demand for free. I am pleased to announce that the link to sign up to the platform went live over the weekend and already over 9,000 people have signed up. You can sign up and find out more about Les Mills On Demand.

CEO Update Wednesday 25 March 2020

As expected, a lot has changed since I did my update last week. Confirmed coronavirus cases are still rising and in response, the Federal Government has advised that all non-essential businesses must close. For us this means our recreation centres, Kingswim facilities, camp sites, disability services and youth services have all closed until further notice. Fortunately, our Children’s Programs and YMCA ReBuild have been classified as essential, and therefore these services will continue to operate until we receive further directive from the government. 

Sadly, due to these closures, thousands of staff have been stood down until further notice. The decision to stand down staff was not an easy one, but it was a necessary one to ensure there is a Y for you to come back to after this health crisis passes. I am not going to sugar coat it – the next few months are going to be tough. I understand that many of you have rent or mortgages to pay, bills to pay and loved ones to look after. While we are doing everything in our power to support you during this time, it is not going to be easy. To demonstrate my commitment and support to you, I began working without pay on Monday, as I could never ask my own staff to receive no pay if I did not do the same.

I would like to thank our incredible Y leaders. Many managers have had to deliver devastating news to their teams over the past couple of days, all the while knowing that the same news was soon to be delivered to them in many cases. This takes a huge amount of leadership and resilience, and the work you are doing is extraordinary. 

On the Staff and Volunteer Information Page you will find external job opportunities. We are working with other organisations, such as Coles and Woolworths, to assist our staff in accessing and applying to a variety of short term or casual job opportunities. To further support staff, we are currently working with LES MILLS to provide our staff, volunteers and customers free access to LES MILLS On Demand so you can do a range of workouts at home. We will provide a link for you to access the platform in the coming days. 

Nationwide, we are taking the necessary, precautionary steps to help stop the spread of coronavirus. Unfortunately last Friday, I received news that a staff member from YMCA Brisbane tested positive for COVID-19. This is the first confirmed case within our YMCA community. To date the staff member has experienced only mild symptoms and is self-isolating at home and currently feeling well. Receiving this news reminded me that no one is safe from this virus. If we want to keep our communities safe, we must act now. 

The information we are receiving from all levels of government is constantly changing and we are working hard to keep you updated via the Staff and Volunteer Information Page. I will also be providing updates via livestream in Inside the Y. I’ll be hosting my first livestream on Friday 27 March at 12pm, where I will provide updates and answer questions.
